Understanding Triads and Chord Construction

This lesson focuses on building triads using the circle of thirds method. We'll explore how to construct major and minor triads from a given root note, understanding the intervals involved (major and minor thirds).

Triad Building:

  • Major Triads: A major triad is built using a major third (4 semitones) and a minor third (3 semitones) interval from the root note. For example, in C major, the triad is C-E-G.
  • Minor Triads: A minor triad is built using a minor third (3 semitones) and a major third (4 semitones) interval from the root note. For example, in C minor, the triad is C-Eb-G.

Circle of Thirds Method:

The circle of thirds provides a systematic way to build triads. Starting with a root note, move up a major third to find the third of the triad, then move up another minor third to find the fifth. This process can be reversed to find the notes of a minor triad.

Practical Application:

This method is invaluable for quickly constructing triads in any key. It helps develop an understanding of chord structure and relationships, essential for improvisation and composition.

Practice building triads in different keys using this method. Experiment with different voicings and inversions to expand your understanding.
